Crochet-edged Vintage Pillowcases

DSCF0041a

My birthday was last week, and since I have decided that after forty, the best hope for a good birthday is “don’t do anything that sucks” (advice from my daughter, and very good advice, too—I’m passing it along to you, and you don’t have to wait until you’re forty, either) I decided to spend the day watching Ramona and Beezus and crocheting a fancy edging onto these thrifted pillowcases.  I love that movie.  Result?  Best birthday ever.  See?  It works!  Try it.

Of course I had to run myself into the ground the day before, getting through all the day to day stuff that kind of sucks a little bit, so I wouldn’t have to do it on my Big Day.  Well worth it, I think.

  1. Happy Birthday Girl! Lovely pillowcases, just the right touch. There should be no sucky stuff on your birthday, so glad you got ahead of it. Enjoy your week!

  2. I think "don't do anything that sucks" might be my new mantra for life in general.
    Your pillowcases look fab, too.

  3. I recently had a birthday too. I'm getting closer to 50 which is a little alarming. Crocheting and watching a movie sound like a great birthday to me. I didn't do that, but I did get the Around the Corner crochet edging book for a gift. Happy belated birthday!

  12. Happy 40th Birthday to you.......I will be 50 (fifty, yeah) in a few weeks...which is also on father's day in UK, ahem. When this happened a few years ago, we went to his idea of fun ie a garden centre and bought him a present!! And year before last he forgot completely it was my birthday, well we have only been together for 30 years larf!

    1. Thanks, Susan. I actually am 44 now; I started using the "nothing that sucks" birthday strategy when I turned 40. I can relate to forgetting, too. I keep having to ask people how old I am, or else do the math. :D

  19. Happy belated Birthday! So glad you had a fab time, so much better to keep it low key, enjoy what you do and make sure all the chores have been done already. I have been keeping my birthdays low key for a very long time, just a nice meal out of no housework to do. I now sound supremely old!!! xx

do you have any *tricks* for the foundation blanket stitch? I would edge more pillowcases but I dislike doing that row of blanket stitch

    1. I dislike it, too (ow, my fingertips!) but the only alternative I can see is to make the edging separately and then sew it on. Some suggest a chain stitch foundation--just embroider a chain at the top edge of the pillowcase and then work into that--but I don't find it any less a pain than blanket stitch. It does have a less obtrusive look, though, so maybe you could try that? :)

    2. I've done them that way as well (lucky me...I had several yards of pillow edging my dear Gram crocheted over the years) but I have a tendency to make one strip of edging, then get craft ADD and never make the second...at least with the direct apply approach, I seem to keep going...except for the drat foundation row

the chain might be an option...I may give that a go next time, thanks!
