Stripe-y Blanket, preview

You know how when you get a new hammer, everything looks like a nail?

I got a new camera.  I do not know how to use it yet.  In the process of figuring out what all the buttons do and where all the settings are, I have taken twenty jillion bad pictures of everything.  And a couple good ones.  Here’s the new blanket I’m working on.  I am madly in love with that violet and peachy-orange combo.  Those two colors should get married right now, and be together forever.

I’m doing this blanket in woven stitch, also sometimes called “linen stitch”, which is just sc, ch1 across, and then on the next row, sc in the ch1 space, ch1.  It’s the easiest thing in the world, and I’m left with nothing at all to concentrate on except which color comes next.  I love that.

Edit to add:  Hi, whipup friends!  I know, there's not much info in this post.  For more specifics regarding woven stitch, I recommend a google search--there are lots of good tutorials out there. This is one of those things that, once you get it set up and get rolling, it's as easy as could be.  Here's the finished blanket, along with a link to the pattern, if you're interested.  Good luck!

  2. I love the colors in your blanket and the stitch sounds super easy. I have been crocheting for 40 years. I have been stuck in a rut making baby blankets with double crochets but I found a hexagonal pattern that I adore. I'm venturing out of my safety zone and trying new things. I must try that linen stitch soon and I must try the different colors. Thanks for the inspiration.

  3. I have had my camera for a year now and all the buttons are still set to auto. I have no clue beyond that :) What is that delicious yarn you are using? The colors are great!!!!

    1. The colors are my usual assortment of Ella Rae, Berroco Vintage, and unlabeled leftovers. I'm too embarrassed to show you my stash of single skeins. It covers the sofa. Nothing for it but to make blankets, right?

  4. I love that stitch! I also love the one where you sc in the front of the next stitch and then the back of the next stitch it makes a cool looking fabric! Cannot wait to see finished product!

  25. Lovely colours you're using there. I made a blanket in that stitch a while back and it works up really fast, although I thought that particular stitch was called 'tweed stitch'!

    1. It might be called "tweed" stitch, too. Crochet stitches seem to have many names. :)

  27. I've never heard of linnen stitch before - but I'm really likeing it! :) I must give it a go (perhaps when bub comes and I will need a "pattern" that my tired brain will be able to handle! LOL)

  35. I've just today found your blog and have spent the last several hours going through all of your blog posts. I absolutely love your crochet projects, your writing style, your farm, your work room, your pillow cases, and your quilts! You've inspired me to pull out the hooks and the fabric and get working on some things I've let sit for far too long and to add a few new things as well - I hope I can remember how to crochet.     1. Hi Sarah, so far I love it, although it has a lot more features than I know what to do with. Lots of non-automatic settings, and I can't tell the difference between them yet--but it lets in a lot more light than my last camera (or at least it seems to, I don't know if that's how it works) and I really like that. I'm giving it a thumbs up. :)

    1. Hi Katie, thanks very much! I'm using my usual worsted weight yarn and 3.75 (US F) hook. If I were starting this over again, though, I'd probably go up a size or two with the hook, to add some drape.

    1. I don't honestly know--I just kept chaining and counting "one, two, one, two" (to make sure I'd end up with an even number of stitches) and held it up occasionally to see if it was big enough. When it was, I turned and worked the next row. Good luck with your blanket! :)

    1. Dishcloths really don't work that well. When wet, the cloth stretches a whole lot because of the stitch. I can use them, but they're not my favorites. The cloth does come back together when it dries, but I don't care for using it when it's wet.

  57. When you work the single crochet in the chain fir the first row do you skip stitches or chain one and then single crochet in every stitch?

    1. You need a "turning" chain, so after you finish your foundation chain, turn the work and skip one. Sc in the next ch, ch 1, sc in the next ch, and so on. Then, on the next row, you'll sc in the ch spaces and ch1.

    2. I'm just not getting something. When you say "sc in the next ch, ch 1, sc in the next ch...".are you skipping a stitch in the row before? Assuming your first sc after turning is in the chain #2 spot and then you chain 1, would that chain be bypassing the #3 chain and the next sc go into the #4 chain?
