You know how when you get a new hammer, everything looks like a nail?
I got a new camera. I do not know how to use it yet. In the process of figuring out what all the buttons do and where all the settings are, I have taken twenty jillion bad pictures of everything. And a couple good ones. Here’s the new blanket I’m working on. I am madly in love with that violet and peachy-orange combo. Those two colors should get married right now, and be together forever.
I’m doing this blanket in woven stitch, also sometimes called “linen stitch”, which is just sc, ch1 across, and then on the next row, sc in the ch1 space, ch1. It’s the easiest thing in the world, and I’m left with nothing at all to concentrate on except which color comes next. I love that.
Edit to add: Hi, whipup friends! I know, there's not much info in this post. For more specifics regarding woven stitch, I recommend a google search--there are lots of good tutorials out there. This is one of those things that, once you get it set up and get rolling, it's as easy as could be. Here's the finished blanket, along with a link to the pattern, if you're interested. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI love the colors in your blanket and the stitch sounds super easy. I have been crocheting for 40 years. I have been stuck in a rut making baby blankets with double crochets but I found a hexagonal pattern that I adore. I'm venturing out of my safety zone and trying new things. I must try that linen stitch soon and I must try the different colors. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI have had my camera for a year now and all the buttons are still set to auto. I have no clue beyond that :) What is that delicious yarn you are using? The colors are great!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe colors are my usual assortment of Ella Rae, Berroco Vintage, and unlabeled leftovers. I'm too embarrassed to show you my stash of single skeins. It covers the sofa. Nothing for it but to make blankets, right?
DeleteI love that stitch! I also love the one where you sc in the front of the next stitch and then the back of the next stitch it makes a cool looking fabric! Cannot wait to see finished product!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty, the colours work so well :) I'm afraid I'm a bit of a point and press person with my camera, my daughter has my old camera and discovered so much more about it than I ever did within a day of having it! xx
ReplyDeleteLove the colours in your blanket - beautiful.

I am itching to do one of these broader striped blankets! Very nice stitch you're using. Have you also seen Little Woollie Blanket's star stitch?
ReplyDeleteI did see that one, yes--it's beautiful! :)
Delete...the perfection of simple things!!!
ReplyDeletexxxx Alessandra
Love the stripes!
ReplyDeleteI <3 it ... but then again, I adore everything you make!!!! What is the EFS (est. fin. size)?
ReplyDeleteI'm planning for 60" x 80-ish". Nap-size. :)
DeleteLove your colors and have not tried that stitch yet. Everything you do gives me something new to learn:)
ReplyDeleteI would be in love with the blanket also. Gorgeous!!!!
ReplyDeleteThose colours are truly yummy Kristen and that's one of my favourite stitches! xxx
ReplyDeleteWow the colours are beautiful. I love the thick stripes aswell.
ReplyDeletex
It is coming along. Such beautiful colors. I love it..
ReplyDeleteDon't get discouraged you will work out all the settings on your new camera & then take zillions of awesome pics :) Loving those colorful stripes, that sounds like a perfect pattern - look forward to seeing the finished blanket! Helen x
ReplyDeleteLove the thick stripes and I really love the colors! I am going to have to find out how to do that Linen stitch! Very cool!
ReplyDeleteI think everyone needs at least 1 brainless project to pick up when they're feeling... well, when they don't feel like thinking!
ReplyDeleteI love your afghan! Beautiful colors! That is a great stitch! I have been making stripey blankets lately using nothing but half double crochet, mindlessly easy. Have a great day! Twyla
ReplyDeleteI love this stitch... never heard of this one! looks very easy. Will have to try. The blanket is so pretty... love all the colors!
ReplyDeleteShari
I love linen stitch - crochet and knitting. It gives such a fab texture. Your colours are lovely, both cosy and fresh. Delightful!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a Linen Stitch before - it's so beautiful! The colours are fabulous.
ReplyDeleteClaire
I haven't seen that stitch before - its really effective. Lily. xxx
ReplyDeleteNice blanket and another new stitch discovery! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteLovely colours you're using there. I made a blanket in that stitch a while back and it works up really fast, although I thought that particular stitch was called 'tweed stitch'!
ReplyDeleteIt might be called "tweed" stitch, too. Crochet stitches seem to have many names. :)
DeleteI LOVE that stitch! And beautiful colours too. Off to try it now!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend,
Sandra x
I've never heard of linnen stitch before - but I'm really likeing it! :) I must give it a go (perhaps when bub comes and I will need a "pattern" that my tired brain will be able to handle! LOL)
ReplyDeleteYour blanket is looking pretty fab, I must say! :)
Yay for the new camera! Have fun with that!!! I LOVE your blanket. PERFECT colors!!!
ReplyDeletesuper pretty, i agree about the marriage! have fun with your new camera!
ReplyDeleteAnother gorgeous project!! You are an amazing gal aren't you? I adore your new blanket. Love, love, love the stitch - have never seen it before and will most definitely keep that in mind for future projects.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your new camera. It' so exciting using a new toy once you work out what the heck you're doing!
Have a fab weekend hon. I'm on the home stretch of my huge blanket but have been very unmotivated to do a blog post. Must make more effort!!!!

Fleur xx
Que lindo.
ReplyDeleteQue ponto é esse?
Parabéns
Beijo.
I've just today found your blog and have spent the last several hours going through all of your blog posts. I absolutely love your crochet projects, your writing style, your farm, your work room, your pillow cases, and your quilts! You've inspired me to pull out the hooks and the fabric and get working on some things I've let sit for far too long and to add a few new things as well - I hope I can remember how to crochet. Thanks so much for the inspiration!!
ReplyDeleteThe colors are lovely. It looks great so far.
ReplyDeleteYour blanket is beautiful...I'll have to try that stitch pattern out :)
ReplyDeleteSmiles, DianeM
Delightful colors!
ReplyDeleteI love projects don't take a lot of thinking. I love how your colors just seem to flow together and go together so beautifully. I have such a hard time with that and we have a limited color palette and choice of yarns around here. Have a great weekend! Tammy
ReplyDeleteWow, just found your blog, your projects are beautiful and very inspirational, thanks so much for showing us your work. Kitty
ReplyDeleteQue alegria receber sua visita.
ReplyDeleteObrigada.
Sou sua seguidora, venha me seguir também.
Beijo.
lovely colors :D
ReplyDeleteI am in the market for a new camera too, how are you liking yours so far?
ReplyDeleteSarah
Hi Sarah, so far I love it, although it has a lot more features than I know what to do with. Lots of non-automatic settings, and I can't tell the difference between them yet--but it lets in a lot more light than my last camera (or at least it seems to, I don't know if that's how it works) and I really like that. I'm giving it a thumbs up. :)
DeleteI am not good with all of the fancy settings either, I just want a camera that will take lovely photos with not much effort from me! :)
Deletewow - you just make me what to start another crochet project - i love the colours in this one!
ReplyDeleteBrillo colour cominations, as always.
ReplyDeleteXx
I am making an afghan using this stitch - but did not know what it was called. The beauty of this stitch is that you actually make a functional afghan - warm and cozy.
ReplyDeleteCountry Lady in Texas
Hi friends, I like it a lot, and I follow you blog you've added contributors list, please add you love to discuss the best holidays I'll be very happy ..
ReplyDeleteI love your blanket. The color goes so well together . I have been thinking about making a scarf with this stitch and you have motivated me to start it. Thanks for the inspiration. Loves.
ReplyDeleteFantastic blanket - I love it! Can I ask what size hook and what weight yarn you are using?
ReplyDeleteHi Katie, thanks very much! I'm using my usual worsted weight yarn and 3.75 (US F) hook. If I were starting this over again, though, I'd probably go up a size or two with the hook, to add some drape.
DeleteThanks so much, will have an experiment and see how I get on!
ReplyDeleteIn making a baby blanket out of this stitch, how many chain stitches did you use for the foundation row?
ReplyDeleteThanks,Tammy
I don't honestly know--I just kept chaining and counting "one, two, one, two" (to make sure I'd end up with an even number of stitches) and held it up occasionally to see if it was big enough. When it was, I turned and worked the next row. Good luck with your blanket! :)
DeleteStumbled upon this on Pinterest - it's gorgeous! LOVE the color combos :)
ReplyDeleteomg! You have the best blog ever! Love all your crochet and knitted blankets. I'm just going to have to make some!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the colors and the stitch would like to try it making dish cloths do you chain an even number of stitches or odd?
ReplyDeleteDishcloths really don't work that well. When wet, the cloth stretches a whole lot because of the stitch. I can use them, but they're not my favorites. The cloth does come back together when it dries, but I don't care for using it when it's wet.
DeleteLovely. I'm a new crocheter. Is this stitch pretty easy to keep even without the sides bowing in and out?
ReplyDeleteI also think it is very pretty! My question is what yarn did you use?
ReplyDeleteWhen you work the single crochet in the chain fir the first row do you skip stitches or chain one and then single crochet in every stitch?
ReplyDeleteYou need a "turning" chain, so after you finish your foundation chain, turn the work and skip one. Sc in the next ch, ch 1, sc in the next ch, and so on. Then, on the next row, you'll sc in the ch spaces and ch1.
DeleteI'm just not getting something. When you say "sc in the next ch, ch 1, sc in the next ch...".are you skipping a stitch in the row before? Assuming your first sc after turning is in the chain #2 spot and then you chain 1, would that chain be bypassing the #3 chain and the next sc go into the #4 chain?
DeleteHi mamak,
DeleteHere's a good photo tutorial:

Good luck!
That site has been hacked and has malicious malware. It's blocked each time I try to access it. I'd love to learn that stitch but I can't find it anywhere else... :(
DeleteGllie
Great video tutorial for this stitch!
Deletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBf2Bf3i3y0
How many chains do you start with?
ReplyDeleteI love this blanket! What size is the crochet hook that you are using?
ReplyDeleteI used this pattern with a baby variegated yarn years ago to make a baby blanket. It works up so nicely.
ReplyDeleteI tried following that link to the tutorial but my computer blocked it saying there is malware on the site! could you provide a different link with a "how to" on that stitch please? thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Darlene, you can just google "woven stitch crochet tutorial" and find lots of resources. :)
DeleteJust saw your lovely blanket on facebook so I clicked in to see if it's the same stitch I use for a lot of my own blankets. What a nice surprise to see that it is indeed my very favorite woven stitch and you even linked to my own video tutorial! Thank you so much for doing that! I do love when people get some use out of my videos! I noticed the note about malware on my site too, and wanted to let you and your readers know that my site has been cleaned up and should be good to go. Here's the link again if anyone is looking for the video: http://www.hookedonneedles.com/2010/01/learn-to-crochet-woven-stitch-video.html
ReplyDeleteThanks again for the link, and your blanket is just gorgeous! I love the colors!

When I tried to go to the website http://www.hookedonneedles.com/2008/07/how-to-crochet-woven-stitch.html my antii-virus program stopped it & said the site was a known source for viruses.... What's that about??
ReplyDeleteIf you do a google search on "Crochet Woven Stitch Tutorial" you'll find other sources. :)
ReplyDeleteWow this is great but it looks like it took a lot of time! You changed the colour often. I admire your patience!
ReplyDeleteMaybe because I'm here at work; I went to the link that shows the blanket completed (beautiful by the way) and then when I click the link to get the pattern directions... nothing appears. BooHoo :(
ReplyDeleteHi there Angie,
DeleteI just gave it a click to make sure, and it worked for me, so maybe you have a firewall at work? It may take a minute to load, too.
